What is Lyophilized? (Peptide Glossary)
Lyophilized: Freeze-dried. The stable powder form that most research peptides ship and store in, produced by freezing the solution and removing water under vacuum.
Lyophilization (freeze-drying) is the process that turns a peptide solution into the dry, stable powder found in research vials. The peptide solution is frozen, then placed under vacuum so the ice sublimates directly from solid to vapor, leaving behind a dry cake or powder without the heat damage that ordinary drying would cause.
The reason peptides are sold lyophilized is stability. In solution, most peptides degrade within days to weeks even refrigerated. As a lyophilized powder, the same peptide can remain stable for months at room temperature and years at -20C. This is why reputable vendors ship lyophilized vials and why a vendor shipping pre-mixed liquid peptides (outside of cold chain) deserves scrutiny.
Quality lyophilization produces a uniform, solid white cake or puck at the bottom of the vial. A vial containing loose dust, discolored (yellow or brown) powder, or visible moisture can indicate poor processing, oxidation, or contamination. The appearance of the lyophilized cake is one of the quickest visual quality checks a researcher can perform.
