What is In Vivo? (Peptide Glossary)
In Vivo: Research conducted within a living organism - animal models or human trials. Latin: 'in the living'.
In vivo research takes place inside living organisms - typically rodent models in preclinical peptide research, and human subjects in clinical trials. In vivo studies capture what in vitro work cannot: absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and the integrated response of whole biological systems.
The peptide research literature is heavily preclinical, meaning most in vivo evidence comes from animal models. Rodent studies on BPC-157 tendon repair, MOTS-c metabolic effects, and epitalon aging markers are examples. Animal results do not automatically translate to humans - biology differs in absorption, receptor distribution, and metabolism - but they establish proof of concept and safety rationale for further research.
A small number of research-market peptides have human in vivo data from formal clinical trials: semaglutide, tirzepatide, tesamorelin, bremelanotide (PT-141), and thymosin alpha-1 among them.
