Cold chain refers to keeping products within a controlled temperature range through storage and transit. For lyophilized peptides, cold chain is less critical than many assume - properly freeze-dried peptides tolerate room temperature for weeks without meaningful degradation, which is why most vendors ship in standard packaging. Cold packs become important for pre-mixed solutions, certain fragile compounds, and summer shipping in hot climates.
Where cold chain genuinely matters is with reconstituted peptides, liquid formulations, and large proteins. A vendor shipping liquid GLP-1 agonists or reconstituted products without cold packs is taking a real stability risk. Some premium suppliers offer insulated packaging with gel packs as a paid or standard option - a meaningful quality signal.
For storage after delivery: lyophilized peptides keep best at -20C for long-term storage, while reconstituted vials belong at 2-8C (refrigerator, never freezer) and should be used within the compound's stability window, typically 20-30 days. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles degrade peptides, so aliquoting is the standard research practice for anything that will be used over an extended period.
