What is Somatropin?
GH acts both directly and through hepatic and local IGF-1 production, regulating growth, body composition, protein metabolism and tissue repair. Pharmaceutical somatropin is an approved drug for growth hormone deficiency and related conditions; research-grade material is used in metabolism, aging, and muscle-wasting models. As a large protein requiring correct disulfide folding, it is produced only by recombinant expression - 'synthetic HGH' claims are a red flag, and 192-aa (somatrem) or truncated variants are inferior or counterfeit material.
Mechanism of Action (Research Context)
Dimerizes the growth hormone receptor (GHR), activating JAK2/STAT5 signaling. Direct effects include lipolysis and antagonism of insulin action; indirect effects are mediated by IGF-1 produced in liver and target tissues, driving growth, protein synthesis and cell proliferation.
